Spiked Lemon Basil Martini

I made this drink recently for a dinner party.  It was simple to make, and the flavor was delicious.

 

INGREDIENTS:

Simple Syrup (1 Cup Water/1 Cup Sugar) & 8-10 Fresh Basil Leaves

2 Cups Fresh Lemon Juice

2 Cups Vodka

Sliced Lemon and/or Fresh Basil Leaves (Garnish)

Rim: Sugar and Lemon Zest

 

DIRECTIONS:

Simple Syrup: Place 1 Cup of Water and 1 Cup of Sugar in a pot and heat until the sugar dissolves (approx. 3-5 minutes).  Add the fresh basil leaves and simmer for 15 minutes.  Let mixture cool and discard basil leaves.  In a large pitcher, add the simple syrup, fresh lemon juice and vodka.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.  When ready, rim the martini glass with sugar mixture (Zest a lemon and add to ¼ cup of sugar.  Mix well and place on a plate).  Moisten the edge of the glass with a lemon wedge, then dip in the sugar/lemon zest mixture.  Pour the refrigerated lemon basil drink mix into the glass and garnish with lemon and fresh basil leaves, if desired.
